What Is Lupus?

There are many different types of health issues that we may experience in life but some of them are more serious than others. One condition is known as an autoimmune disorder, and there are many diseases that fall under this category. One of those diseases is lupus, and like other autoimmune diseases, it causes the body's own immune system to attack various tissues and organs. This disease can result in severe inflammation that affects many systems within the body. Some of the potential systems that are affected include the kidneys, joints, skin, brain, lungs, and heart.

One of the difficulties of having lupus is the fact that it can sometimes be difficult to get a diagnosis. In many cases, the symptoms and signs that are experienced as a result of this autoimmune disease are very similar to other ailments. Some of the signs that are associated with it, including a facial rash that looks like butterfly wings on both cheeks may occur as a result of lupus and help with the diagnosis but it does not occur in all cases.

Some people may be born with a predisposition to experiencing lupus. The disease may be triggered by any number of different issues, including exposure to sunlight, infections, and certain medications. As is the case with any autoimmune disease, lupus does not have a cure but symptoms are often reduced with medication and the possibility of lifestyle changes.

Even though there is not a single list of symptoms that would be the same for every case of lupus, there are a few to watch out for that can determine if you have this problem. Some of the symptoms may occur over the course of time and can even be temporary. Other symptoms could come on severely and quickly, a problem that is known as 'flares'. Some of the potential symptoms include fever, joint pain, fatigue, butterfly rash on the face, shortness of breath, skin lesions, dry eyes, headaches, and confusion.

Lupus is a condition that occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissues within the body. Although it is not fully understood why it occurs, it is thought that it may take place as a combination of environmental issues and genetics. Factors that could influence the development of lupus include infections, sunlight exposures, and medications. You may also be at an increased risk for this condition if you are between the ages of 15-45, are a woman, or are Hispanic, African-American, or Asian American.
